Antique Buffets/Dressers

Antique Buffets/Dressers
Generally speaking antique buffets are French sideboards, appearing in the late 16th or 17th century. Although  the antique buffet table originates from Sweden circa 1550.
In England a buffet was called a court cupboard, a precursor to the dresser. The demarcation between cupboards and antique dressers in the 17th century is somewhat difficult to define, After 1650 it was common to have dressers without the upper superstructure. Naturally the antique dressers reflected the style of the period as far as drawer decoration and leg turning was concerned. Country craftsmen made dressers throughout the 18th century long after they had ceased to be fashionable in town houses. Now antique dressers are sometimes reffered to as Welsh antique dressers.
