ANTIQUE - VICTORIAN CHAIR DESIGNED BY D.G. ROSSETTI

ANTIQUE - VICTORIAN CHAIR DESIGNED BY D.G. ROSSETTI
Quantity:
An English painted beech chair, mainly turned wood, but having an usual curved back splat with a newly woven rush seat. This type of chair was developed from a traditional country Sussex type, giving a naturalistic, arty form. These chairs were stained black and sometimes green, we have painted, then slightly distressed the frame using a French grey by "Farrow & Ball". Designed by D.G. Rossetti and made by Morris & Co., about 1865. William Morris exhibited at the 1862 Exhibition and was the man most responsible for swinging public taste away from the elaborate furniture laden with carved decoration of the mid-century, he probably never designed any furniture himself. William Morris began as a painter and his personal talent was for the design of wallpaper and fabrics. The basic style of Morris & Co, is to be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
